Toffee the young golden retriever puppy was in her small, bare backyard, looking bored. She stood up and sniffed her way cross the bare earth ground, hoping against hope for something new to be found there. Then she sniffed back the other way. Then she sat up, ears cocked, trying to hear any movement inside the house. It was no good, since her owner had gone off in his car like he did most mornings. Toffee sat down and nibbled at her paws just for something to do, but that got boring quickly as well. She rolled around on her back in the dirt then jumped up and shook herself, her feathering matted under her legs and tummy. Hearing some children shouting happily, she jumped up by the fence and whined hopefully. If only somebody would come and play with her!

Leo perked his ears, hearing the whine. He ran over, thinking the whine was familiar. He clawed at the fence, the familiar scent getting to him too. Failing, he got back on his paws. "Hello? Who's there?" he woofed.

It took Toffee a moment to realize where the voice was coming from - and the sound it if stirred vague, but comforting memories in her mind. Her fluffy ears twitched madly until she caught a whiff of scent, then she scampered over, opposite Leo with the fence between them. "Intruder alert, intruder alert!" Yapped Toffee, sounding utterly thrilled, with no trace of aggression in her puppy-voice or in her wildly wagging tail. She was just so excited to talk to anybody!
She jumped up at the wooden fence, which was set too closely for her to see through., still wuffing away happily. "I'm here! And I'm the guardian of dis house!"
