It was midday, and the sun cast dapple light through the branches of the trees. Though out in the open sunlight it was unbearably hot, in the shade by the creek, the temperature actually felt quite pleasant. There, a lanky red fox lazed near the shallows, one paw trailing absently in the water.
A flash of silver caught Cavan's eye. Not far from where his paw made ripples in the swift stream, a minnow was wiggling about above the rocky bottom. It wasn't very big; not enough to make a meal. In spite of that, the tod decided it was going to be his.
Shifting carefully into an upright position, the silver cross fixated on the little fish beneath him. He stayed poised like that for a good long while, one paw raised and ready to strike. Finally he lashed out, sending up a wave of cool water soaking into his coat. Cavan sputtered angrily, blinking water out of his eyes in time to see the minnow dart downstream, out of sight.
"Dammit." he cursed under his breath, shaking himself dry.

A slightly amused smile crossed Mintaka's face as she watched the tod fish. The pretty dark silver fox was young, and in the full bloom of her youth. Her eyes were a deep amber, like the richest of honey, and they gleamed with curiosity at this other fox.
Stepping forward, a tinkling laugh came from her mouth as she said, "Looks like you need some practice."

Cavan's felt his face grow hot and he flicked his ears irritably. It was just his luck that someone would happen to stumble across him in his moment of failure. And of course, it had to be a vixen. He could hear the mockery, the laughter in her voice when she spoke to him.
Wel, he wasn't just about to take that lying down. Standing up to face her, the tod looked Mintaka over carefully. She was young, probably not much older than he was. Cavan doubted she could do much better than him at fishing.
"Well, why don't you show me how it's done then?" Cavan said with a smirk. There was a mischievous gleam in his amber eyes. He would just love to see her mess up, after how she had ridiculed him.

"Sorry, I don't eat fish," Mintaka answered promptly, turning her nose up at Cavan. It was meant to be a sign of distaste, but she wasn't sure how the tod would take it.
She did fish, yes, but her efforts resulted in an empty stomach, and she was not ready to share her failure. Thus, he'll probably want an explanation. "Fish doesn't suit my taste."

The cocky smirk only grew. She must have been spoiled as a kit to not take anything she could find as food. Then again, she was only a vixen. Maybe she just needed a strong tod to show her how it was done.
"Picky eater, huh?" he crooned, flicking his tail towards Mintaka's nose. "Or are you just afraid of getting your paws dirty?" Slowly he started to circle around her, keeping a steady gaze on the silver vixen all the while. She was a pretty little thing, he had to admit. Just needed to be taught some manners.
Suddenly, Cavan jumped forward and tried to shove her into the creek. "The water's nice and cool, why don't you give it a try?" he cackled, prancing out of her range.

A smoky red fox padded towards a stream, looking to catch a meal. Sif hadn't had any luck catching food on land today so she figured it might be a good idea to look for some fish. After all, there was usually less competition for swimming food.
Except today, apparently. Sif froze in surprise for a few moments when she saw the two other foxes on the other side of the stream. ...Were they playing? They'll scare away all the fish.
"Well, fancy meeting you here. I take it you've both eaten well, since you can afford to splash around like kits." She rolled her amber eyes in annoyance.

Sun trotted up to the stream. She took in the scene before her and shrank back, her shyness driving her away from the other foxes.

The dark silver fox cast an eye over Cavan, letting out another sniff. "It's not that I'm picky," she whined, her ears flattening a bit. What was with this tod?
As Cavan made the shove, Mintaka actually fell into the creek before he connected, in all her shock. The vixen let out a small shriek of horror as water splashed all over her. "What's your problem? It's freakin' cold in here!" Tottering out, she began shaking the water off her, making sure to aim in Cavan's direction.

Laughing maliciously, Cavan flinched away from her spray of water. He was a bit damp, but nothing the sun wouldn't easily dry out. Mintaka was much wetter, and he felt a smug sort of accomplishment. That's what she got for making fun of him.
His ears flicked at the sound of another voice and he looked around at the sound of another Vixen. Cavan was vaguely surprised to see two in one place; had he accidentally stumbled into someone else's troop? No matter, he could deal with an angry tod if it came to that.
"Lighten up babe, the prey's running just fine." he said with a grin, waving a lazy forepaw in Sif's direction. "We were just having a little fun."

Sif bristled for a moment, she didn't like being called "babe." But after some quick deliberation she decided that while she was hungry, she wasn't too hungry. So she sat down on her bank and decided to find amusement in this.
"If you think that splashing attracts, that might be your first problem," Sif said with a smirk.

"Excuse me?" Mintaka growled, her ears flattened against her skulls. The dark silver fox rounded upon Sif, her eyes narrowed. She was a wet, dripping mess. Her normally fluffy fur was flattened down with the weight of water clinging on it, showing her smaller size.

Frowning slightly, Cavan glanced between the two vixens. "Hey, let's not get too riled up now." he said with a nervous chuckle. He wasn't in the mood to get involved in any bloodshed today, especially not with two lovely ladies.
Hoping to settle the dispute, the tod lifted his nose into the air and took a nice big whiff. There were voles about, though they were probably hiding if they were anywhere near the river. Besides that he could scent plenty of mice and a squirrel or two.
"There's plenty of prey about. Why don't we have a little contest to see who can catch the most?" Cavan's characteristic smirk returned. "I think that would prove that everyone here's perfectly capable of catching their own prey."

(I'm a little confused, was I extremely unclear about Sif being on the other bank, or did Mintaka just barge through the water?)
Sif blinked in surprised when the other vixen growled at her, she was talking to the tod! Sif pointed her ears sideways and opened her mouth to gekker at her and was just about to let her know just what she thought of that when Cavan suggested a contest.
"Hmph. I'm more interested in what I can catch, but that sounds interesting." Sif relaxed her ears and stood back up. She'd probably have to go far to find anything that hadn't run off.

Amusement played in Slyvia's amber eyes. The vixen's silvery tail gracefully swished back-and-forth across the ground, lifting a small cloud of dust. She watched the scene play out before her in the comfort of shade on the far bank. Because of her medium silver pelt, her bright amber eyes were the only thing clearly visable.
